Join artist Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi at her studio for a contact improvisation session with facilitator Ágnes Várkonyi. Contact improvisation is a spontaneous dance practice that prompts physical dialogue through shared movement defined by weight, fluidity, and continuous physical touch – working within boundaries of invitation and refusal. The form works with real time decision making in movement from a ‘somatics’ approach. The session offers insight into Nkosi’s ongoing exploration of what she describes as ‘the mechanics and poetry of falling’ in action which will form the core of the upcoming solo exhibition in October. 

Nkosi writes: ‘falling has become central to my artistic inquiry. Through visual art and movement practice, I have been exploring its mechanics and phenomenology, finding resonances beyond sport. Falling is compelling in that it occupies a crucial place in such varied endeavours as dance, astronomy, and everyday life (walking itself is a negotiation between falling and recovery). A fall’s conclusion is always undetermined: it may end in elegant landing, painful impact, or continue indefinitely, as with astral bodies like our planet, without resolution. This inquiry has developed alongside a growing intuition that the notion of ‘falling’ offers a productive lens through which to understand the apocalyptic moment – a moment in which people find their emotional and physical systems resonating with prevailing structural collapse.’
