FNB Art Prize Exhibition

Saturday, August 24th @ 11:00

FNB Art Joburg and Goodman Gallery are delighted to invite you to a solo exhibition by Lindokuhle Sobekwa, winner of the 2023 FNB Art Prize.

Umkhondo: Going Deeper unites two significant and interconnected bodies of work — I carry Her photo with Me and Ezilalini (The Country) — seen together for the first time. The exhibition showcases Sobekwa’s journey of introspection and discovery as he wrestles with absence, loss and belonging.

It reflects his deep interest in (re)enactments of memory, personal histories and lived realities while also drawing attention to broader societal issues through a lens-based practice that spans over a decade. In Umkhondo: Going Deeper Sobekwa critically examines the enduring legacies of historical injustices and their effects on personal and collective identities, work he describes as “confronting the deep scars left by apartheid and colonialism…exploring the fragmentation and poverty that continue to reverberate through South African society.”

Event details

The Anglo American art and object collection is a combination of art collected over several decades through four different companies: Anglo American, de Beers Group, Anglo American Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore.

The collection comprises of 3600 works, with around 1000 pieces in the collection on display at the newly commissioned Rosebank offices. Although vast, the collection experienced an acquisition hiatus from the early 2000s until 2021 creating a significant gap in the collection’s representation of contemporary art. The collection now has a dedicated curator, Megan Scott, tasked with its cataloguing and digitisation, opening an exciting new chapter which will see the gradual procurement of significant works that reflect our contemporary South African and African art world.
