Billie Zangewa dinner with Cartier

September 06 @ 18:00

A prolific artist, born in Malawi and practicing in South Africa, Billie Zangewa uses raw silk to make collaged portraits of the everyday. These narratives do not make grand gestures or even overt political statements. Instead, her figurations focus on mundane domestic preoccupations; universal themes connecting us to each other. Often the protagonist in her works, Zangewa becomes a heroine whose daily life is revealed through the scenes she illustrates. As tender and textural in material as they are in subject, the works highlight the soft, fringed and unsuspected parts of the African everyday in a way that asserts that Black life is not a monolith.

In collaboration with the Cartier Foundation, Zangewa will welcome a select number of guests into her home. Flowing from a visit of her home studio to a sit down dinner, the evening will deepen guests’ grasp of her practice.

Event details

The Anglo American art and object collection is a combination of art collected over several decades through four different companies: Anglo American, de Beers Group, Anglo American Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore.

The collection comprises of 3600 works, with around 1000 pieces in the collection on display at the newly commissioned Rosebank offices. Although vast, the collection experienced an acquisition hiatus from the early 2000s until 2021 creating a significant gap in the collection’s representation of contemporary art. The collection now has a dedicated curator, Megan Scott, tasked with its cataloguing and digitisation, opening an exciting new chapter which will see the gradual procurement of significant works that reflect our contemporary South African and African art world.
